Carolina Scrums down against Florida

Gainesville, FL — In a scrappy match UNC produced glimpses of fine rugby to overcome a committed Florida side. It was clear from an early stage that the game was not going to be a repeat of last season's drubbing as Carolina made numerous mistakes early in the game. Carolina's backs looked threatening throughout the game but the final pass often went to ground. Florida were quick to pounce on any loose play and particularly adept at pilfering the ball in the contact area. Despite heavy Carolina pressure Florida scored the first try of the game. The Carolina backs were undone by a first phase move from a lineout within their own twenty-two.
Carolina responded well to the Gator try with the forwards dominating both scrums and lineouts. Despite much time spent in Florida's twenty two it was an interception on the half-way line from centre Chris Tiffany that put Carolina in the lead. With a penalty from McKeever, UNC lead 10-7 at the half.
The second half was controlled by Carolina. However, despite much time in the Florida half, Carolina only returned with penalty kicks. Strong tackling in midfield saw McKeever pounce on a loose ball to score Carolina's second try. The last quarter was a messy affair with frustrations boiling over. Florida scored again in the final minutes with an exceptional individual effort.
Carolina now look forward to hosting Tennessee in their second Matrix game of the season.
