Six Named to 2007 North Carolina All-Stars; NCRU takes Second at South All-Star Championships

Columbus, GA — On November 3rd the North Carolina All-Star team travelled to Columbus, Georgia to take place in the USA Rugby South All-Star Championships. Six members of the club were selected to the All-Star team:

Rufaro Sikipa - Senior - Scrum Half
Rick Baker - Senior - Prop
Eric Martin - Senior - 8 Man
Jason Schwartz - Junior - Fullback
Evan Raczkowski - Sophomore - Prop
Alex Lee - Freshman - Flanker

The NC All-Star team started the day off with a win against Georgia, 12-10. The win came off a late try from 8-Man Eric Martin who broke several tackles to put the NC team up for good. The NC team dominated the game for 80 minutes, but several penalties and general miscommunication between players representing several universities thwarted nearly all of the team's chances inside the 22. However, the team pulled together late to post a victory against a solid Georgia side. Starting the game for the Heels were Sikipa, Lee, Martin and Schwartz, Baker coming in at half.

The second match-up pitted NC against the returning champions, Mid-South. The Mid-South team was able to push around the smaller, lighter pack of NC, resulting in several tries off of broken play. The final score was 26-5, although the NC team truly represented well against a cohesive and powerful Mid-South. Starting for the Heels were Sikipa, Martin, Lee, Baker, with Schwartz and Raczkowski seeing time in the 2nd half.

Congratulations to all of the members of the NC All-Star team on their 2nd Place finish in the USA Rugby South All-Star Championships.
