Winston-Salem, NC — UNC traveled to Wake forest, after Placing Second at the ACI tournament in Florida. The UNC team fielded three new starters with Darren Webber at Loosehead prop, Travis Spencer at scrum-half and Ben Cunningham on the wing.
The first half consisted of frantic play on the offensive, which produced a measly 3 point penalty kick.
The lack of intensity in the back line defense allowed the handling of the Wakes back line go unchecked who looked more likely to score. This allowed Wake to come with in striking distance of scoring a try. Where the back line was lacking in defense, the forwards held strong and held up a Wake try. Through lack of concentration and intensity, Wake forest was able to produce a penalty kick. The first half ended with a 3 all score.
The second half started with a revitalization of the back line. The defense was placing pressure on the Wake line, producing turnovers. The game was played the majority of the time in Wake's side of the pitch, with Wake unable to push out. The first try was scored by Justin Epifanio. The next try came from a 5 meter scrum, flanker Alex Lee picked up an open ball and rushed the Wake defense to score the final try of the game. Towards the end of the match, Wake put on strong pressure to put a try in, but the strength and fitness of the UNC defense kept them out. The final score of the match was UNC 18 v. Wake Forest 3.
