UNC Rugby

Tour Report: Florida 1998

by Jay Haney

For many of the UNC ruggers, the 1998 Fall Break was spent in sunny Florida. The Tar Heels were joined by two excellent Clemson ruggers, Will and Andres, as they roamed the beaches and universities of the Sunshine State. Upon their arrival in Florida, the Tar Heels were hosted by the University of Central Florida's rugby team, who were a good bunch of guys. The Knights gave a warm welcome to the travelers and, of course, hosted several wild nights in Orlando. When UNC and UCF finally hit the pitch, however, all friendships were temporarily put aside as both teams went to war. As it turns out, the game was called early due to fading daylight. The undermanned UNC squad held strong but lost a close match to Central Florida.

After a few days of relaxing in and around Orlando, the UNC/Clemson contingent traveled to Gainesville to visit the reknown University of Florida. After one free night to hit the town, the Tar Heels stepped up to face the Gators on a hot Sunday morning. The game was dominated in the first half by the UFL ruggers but UNC stood strong the second half -- the game was basically considered a draw. After a small party/cookout hosted by UFL, our guys began the long drive back to the Carolinas. All in all, it was an extremely fun and relaxing tour and we are all looking forward to the days when we can host UFL and UCF ruggers here in Chapel Hill.
