Tour Report: Bahamas 1997

by Jon Bruns

The 1997 tour to the Bahamas was the first tour for the Carolina Rugby Team in a couple of years, and the players made up for this lack of touring threefold. What started out as a simple trip, turned out to be a major fiesta that took the better part of the Thanksgiving break. Rick Rodgers, our distinguished social chair, arranged the entire trip: hotel, transportation, food, drink, women, match and a very famous Cruise.

Sponsored by Johnny T-shirt: The Carolina Store of Franklin Street, we were a sharp presence with our matching khakis and tour polo shirts. While some of the team members traveled by plane to the main transfer point, Ft. Lauderdale, most of the members drove there from Chapel Hill. As you can imagine, a van filled with a bunch of rugby players with nothing but the Bahamas on their minds, the rendezvous at the airport became the start of another set of tour memories.

Once the mayhem started, our main goal was to maintain the fiesta throughout the vacation. Under the leadership of our hero, Rick took us to the motherland and beyond. Nassau became our stomping ground for a week of dance clubs, casinos, cheap hotel food, and something that looked like a rugby match versus the home team, the "Buccaneers." Although we tried to keep up with them on the pitch, the state of our minds would allow none of that! Needless to say, we all voted that they had the advantage of a "sixteenth man," an advantage that only one can experience in the Caribbean!!!
