UNCRFC cleared of Hazing and Misrepresentation Charges

UNCRFC stays strong after forty years of rubgy in North Carolina

On Tuesday night the suspension on the UNC men’s rugby team was lifted and the team underwent a hearing in front of the Sport Club Program’s Executive Council. The Director of Sports Clubs, Jason Halsey, presented the results of the investigation of hazing, misrepresentation of the university and sport club program, and violation of the Sport Club alcohol policy. The hazing charges were officially dropped before the hearing began because there was no evidence of the club hazing any members past or present.

UNCRFC president, Rufaro Sikipa, spoke on the club’s behalf and stated the club does not condone underage or excessive drinking in any way, but admitted that the club had become slack in administering these policies. Rufaro outlined the clubs intention of moving toward a stricter code of conduct for all players and defended the clubs strong reputation in the rugby community here and abroad. The club received strong support from other clubs in area who sent letters of recommendation towards the clubs conduct while at home and away.

The Council found the club not guilty of misrepresenting the university and encouraged the club to enact the policies they presented at the hearing, specifically the code of conduct and implementation of an alumni board, which will help the club in fundraising and other minor administrative issues. The council imposed a further two week limited suspension in order for the club to clear up all administrative issues missed during the suspension and apply the new policies. The club has now regained all access to university funds previously frozen and has regained access to all practice facilities and equipment. However, at the present time the club is not allowed to travel or participate in away games.

UNCRFC would like to send thanks to everyone who sent their support especially through letters of recommendation, particularly Pat Kane, Director of Rugby at Wake Forest University, Doug Porter, Director of Rugby at the University of Georgia, Stefan Hankin President of the Potomac Athletic Club, and Mr. Nicholas Hayles, one of the clubs hosts during their England tour.

The Tar Heels look to get back on the pitch as soon as possible with practices resuming on Friday building up to the NCRU State Tournament on October 27th and 28th.
