UNC to join new Atlantic Coast Rugby League

by Travis Spencer

Spring 2011 will see the beginning of a new Atlantic Coast Rugby League. The new league will feature nine of the twelve universities that participate in the NCAA's Atlantic Coast Conference. This new format will provide all of the teams involved a chance to play more traditional school rivals, as well as cut down on travel expenses- a primary reason UNC joined the CRL last year. The idea of schools from the ACC playing each other stems from the Atlantic Coast Invitational tournament which was held in both 2008 and 2009. Then UNC coach Andy Richards and Wake Forest University coach Pat Kane created that tournament, and both will contribute significantly to the new league as well.

The teams involved in the new league are:
Clemson
Duke
Georgia Tech
NC State
Maryland
North Carolina
Virginia
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest

As of right now, traveling expenses would make it difficult for Boston College, Miami, and Florida State (the other traditional ACC teams) to join the league.

UNCRFC looks forward to the chance to play more traditional rivals, as well as continue the tradition of the ACI tournament. The tournament will be moved to the fall and will be changed to a sevens format.
